Weight Training

Resistance training

What is Weight Training?

Weight training is also called ‘resistance training’ and ‘strength training’.

Weight training involves organized exercises in which the muscles of the body are forced to contract in response to external weights, body exercise or resistance, or other devices in order to stimulate growth and strength.

Weight or resistance training or strength training does not have to aim at just building big muscles.

Weight training can help tone and shape the body for weight loss and improved personal appearance.

In addition weight training can provide strength, power and endurance in sports such as football, baseball, hockey, cycling and most individual and team sports.

What do you need to start?

If you are planning a home workout, some equipment that you can use include: dumbbells, different types of weights, or an exercise or yoga mat for floor exercises.

Even if you have no equipment, using your own body to contract muscles is a substantial part of weight training. A pushup is a good example of using the body's own weight to train arm and chest muscles. Doing exercises like pushups, sit-ups and chin-ups are all using your own body weight.
