Gum Disease
Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease (gum disease) can start out mild (Gingivitis) and then lead to serious (Periodontitis) if not treated. Gum disease as it progresses can lead to sensitive or bleeding gums, infection, and inevitably receding gums.
Treatments for gum disease vary from medication to surgery. The primary purpose having gum disease treated is to prevent gum disease from permanently damaging tissues, control infection, and prevent tooth loss.
Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque thus removal of plaque regularly by your dentist and good oral hygiene can help prevent mild gingivitis from progressing to a serious stage where a more aggressive form of treatment would be then needed.
