Amtrak

Travel by Train in the U.S.

If you are getting ready to plan a trip by train across a portion of the United States then you need to start to examine the Amtrak site. First you decide what region of the U.S. you want to travel to.

They divide their travel areas by the following regions: California, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, South West. Once you have selected the region they provide you with a listing of the train routes 'name'. For example the route that travels Seattle - Portland - Los Angeles is called "Coast Starlight".

Once you have decided on a specific area you want to travel and select the route they then provide a description of what you will see along the way and all the amenities that are available to you on that particular train. An example of the information they provide is:
Non-Smoking Policy, Checked Baggage Service, Lounge, Dinette, Cafe and Snack Cars, Dining Car.

They also describe train accommodations. Not all trains offer all of the accommodation types.

An example of train accommodations available include:

Reserved Coach Class Seat
Superliner lower level coach seat
Superliner Roomette
Superliner Bedroom
Superliner Family Bedroom
Superliner Accessible Bedroom
